Learning technologist

Central Coast, NSW

I run enterprise learning platforms, and the systems underneath them.

Totara Learn for the World Customs Organization. Blackboard at Swinburne University. The scripting, the reporting and the onboarding automation are mine as well.

01Selected work

Enterprise learning platforms, run at international scale.

01 · World Customs Organization

Running Totara Learn

The World Customs Organization's member countries train their customs officers on Totara Learn, the enterprise LMS that grew out of Moodle. Those users sit in every timezone, so L1 and L2 support ran around the clock. I administered the platform. That covered accounts and permissions, building courses, replacing SCORM packages, writing the documentation and user guides, and the automated workflows that cut onboarding time.

My role: Technical lead

What I did

  1. 01

    Wrote the technical specification

browser support, SCORM conformance, learner records preserved

  2. 02

    Ran the vendor tender

    proposals scored against my specification

  3. 03

    Directed the conversion work

sole technical point of contact for the vendor throughout

  4. 04

    Signed off every converted course

tested, defects logged, republished to both platforms

Delivered before the deadline. Catalogue repackaged into both platforms, learner records intact, no interruption to training.

Blackboard LMS administration

Computer Officer at Swinburne University of Technology. Administered the Blackboard LMS for the student and staff population, built interactive e-learning modules, and wrote the SQL and VBA reporting behind them.

And the tools I have built

  • 03

    Course studio

    Personal build

Builds e-learning courses in the browser. A lesson is a stack of blocks rather than slides on a stage, questions are scored and reported to the LMS, and one payload publishes as SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, xAPI or a plain web zip.

STL files to live product listings

    3D Print Engineering — freelance

An STL file goes in and a live listing comes out: the model rendered to product images, the description written, the listing pushed to the store. One pipeline covering the whole distance between a CAD file and something a customer can buy.

  • 05

    Format-preserving document translation

    3D Print Engineering — freelance

Translation that leaves the document intact. The tool moves the text between languages and puts the tables, the equations and the layout back where it found them, so a document can cross into another language without being rebuilt on the other side.

02About

A learning platform is infrastructure, not a website.

There is an identity provider behind it, a database under it, integrations either side, and a catalogue that has to keep working while all four of those change. Administering one is support, service management and engineering at once — and engineering is the part most learning teams have to go outside for.

I do not. The service desks, cloud tenancies and endpoint fleets behind my learning platform work are why the technical half of the job is not somebody else’s ticket, and the AI automation on top of it is that same habit turned on whatever the platform still makes a person do by hand.
